has been in existence for 14 years. It belongs to important and prestigious world-wide organizations of writers: the American author Jeremiah Healy is currently its president.
Rehabilitation of the genre has been the main and key idea because especially in Western countries there was a lower interest in this genre thanks to television series (after all we can see the same trend in our country). Thanks to these series the genre stopped to respect the basic rules of goodness and evil and very often it was only a presentation of violence, brutality and heartlessness which has nothing in common with a real crime story. The necessity of the crime genre is undoubtful and every literary form brings the element of tension. After all even the first honoured presidents of the world’s AIEP had been well-known authors – Georges Simenon, Friedrich Dűrrenmat.
The Czech Section of AIEP was established in 1989 and it became one of the founding sections. Jiří Procházka has been an important personality until his death, the first president was Václav Erben followed by Jan Šmíd; currently Jan Cimický is the chairman of the Czech Section of AIEP.
Since the beginning the Czech Section has a stable position in the management of the international AIEP; its representatives took part in three important meetings of authors on the festival of crime literature – Semana negra in Gijon, festival Polar in France, in Mexiko and conferences in many member countries (USA, Bulgaria). The conference has taken place in the Czech Republic already twice – the first executive conference took place in February 1989, the highest committee met here in 1995 for the second time.
The Czech Section of AIEP awards two prestigious awards in the area of crime novels production – the Award of the Raven for the best crime story of the year and the Jiří Marek Award for the best crime novel published in last year. The Czech Section of AIEP has been cooperating with the Prague publishing company of František Čermák (Pražský vydavatelská společnost) for a long time. They publish paperbacks with crime stories, a number of serial stories and a collection of best stories which come out of the competition for the Raven.
The effort to map out the topic of violence concentrates on organizing a conference on violence every year which has repeatedly a very good level. Not only authors of crime literature but also specialists from the police and psychologists take part in the conference.
